Scots sweep Averett, 3-0, behind blocks, aces

Maryville College volleyball dominated Averett University on Saturday morning, as the Scots earned their seventh sweep of the 2019 campaign.

MC defeated the Cougars, 3-0 – the second-straight victory of its kind for the Scots. Maryville won 25-18, 25-20, 25-13.

The Orange and Garnet followed Dejane Hester-Taylor's 11-kill effort, as they hit an impressive .205 for the match. The Scots held the Cougars to just a .083 effort in the sweep.

Hester-Taylor hit .318 for her 11 kills, as she tallied a trio of block assists. Maryville had 14 total block assists and nine services aces in their dominating performance.

In the opening set, the Scots posted four service aces and hit .204. A key 6-0 run was spurred by a pair of kills by Brianne Sidner and a Natalie Watts ace. That gave MC separation, 9-2.

Maggie Mathews and Meredith Bonee had key kills, as Sidner added an ace of her own to extend MC's lead to 14-6.

The Scots scored four-straight late in the set, as Saidee McDaniel added an ace. An Averett service error would end the set, 25-18, in the Scots' favor.

The second set saw Maryville storm to a 9-2 advantage. Hester-Taylor and Bonee had kills, as Mathews and Watts added an ace each. Averett had five errors in the run, as MC held the Cougars to just a .143 hitting effort in the set.

Averett rallied, however, tying the match at 13-all vefore a Morgan Barnes kills made it 14-13. Maryville scored five of the next seven, Wyttenbach adding a key kill. Hester-Taylor and Mathews recorded kills late to secure the 25-20 second-set victory.

In the third set, it was all Maryville College. MC went up 12-3 early on and never looked back in taking the third and final set, 25-13. The Scots hit .267 with 15 kills and only three errors in the final set, as Averett was held to a .000 effort with eight total errors.

Maryville (7-5) followed Hester-Taylor, as she added a pair of digs for 12.5 points. Bonee had a double-double of 25 assists, 11 digs, seven kills, a block assist and a service aces, as the sophomore hit .350 for the match.

Sidner added nine kills, eight digs, four block assists, three service aces and an assist, while Mathews had eight kills, six digs and a pair of aces. McDaniel had nine assists, five digs and an aces, as Watts led the defense with a match high 22 digs and two aces. Wyttenbach had four block assists, three digs, two assists and two kills.

For Averett University (3-8), it was Zamyiah Mangum with eight kills and 15 digs. McKenzie Miller added a double-double for the Cougars with 18 assists and 14 digs, while Myka Patterson totaled nine digs.
