Scots use full-team effort to sweep Johnson, 3-0

Maryville College hosted Johnson University on Tuesday night, as the Scots swept the Royals by a score of 3-0.

MC took the first set with ease, 25-14, before the Scots were able to take the victory by committee over the final two sets, 25-21, 25-15.

Dejane Hester-Taylor led the way with 11 kills for Maryville College, as the senior boasted a .455 kill percentage. She added three block assists, a dig and an assist in MC's sweep.

MC totaled a .235 hitting percentage for the match, as they threw down 41 total kills. MC's defensive front forced eight block assists and 20 Johnson errors in the sweep.

It all started in the first set, as Maryville hit .300 as a squad. Maggie Mathews led the way with six kills in the first set, as she added an ace and a dig. Libero MacKenzie Marcrum had three digs, while Brianne Sidner posted three kills and four digs.

The Scots held the Royals to just a .065 effort in the first half, forcing seven total errors. Danielle Quesinberry had four kills and three digs, while Sydney Crook had three kills on as many attempts with two digs.

In the second set, Maryville shifted the lineup. Hester-Taylor recorded six kills on 10 attempts, while Marcrum still anchored the defensive effort with eight digs. Senior Saidee McDaniel – in addition to her setting duties – posted three kills and five digs, as Rhianna Tyldesley added four digs and a pair of kills. Madison Wilkerson had four digs, a block assist and two kills. Anna James' serving rally was key in the set, as she posted an ace and a dig.

Johnson rallied in the set with a .146 kill percentage, as they held MC to a .244 effort.

In the final set of the match, Hester-Taylor added three more kills and a dig. James' serving was key again, as fellow freshman Kamea Nash posted five digs, an ace, a kill and a block assist. Wilkerson added three kills and two digs in the third set, as Natalie Watts came on as the Scots' libero in set three. She had a trio of service aces and six digs to widen the scoring gap late.

MC's defense held the Royals to a negative .026 effort, as Johnson had eight errors to just seven kills.

Maryville College (6-5) was led by Hester-Taylor, as Mathews posted six kills at a .625 clip. She had an ace and a dig, while Wilkerson added five kills, six digs and a pair of block assits.

Kelley Wandell had five kills at a .455 rate, as she posted a pair of block assists and four digs. McDaniel had a team-leading 20 assists with seven digs and three kills, while Meredith Bonee had 13 assists, three digs, two kills and an ace.

Marcrum led the defense will 11 digs and two assists, while Watts posted six digs and a trio of assists in her one set played. James and Nash had five digs each, as Nash added a kill, an ace and a block assists. Wandell, Tyldesley and Sidner had four digs each, as 14 different MC players tallied digs in the contest.

For Johnson (6-3), it was Quesinberry who had nine kills and 17 digs. Crook had seven kills, a team-leading 12 assists and six digs, as Brianna Rodriguez added 11 assists. Brianna Connatser had a match-high 23 digs.

Maryville College will travel to Danville, Va. on Saturday, Sept. 21 for a double-header. The Scots take on Averett University at 11:00 a.m., before facing off with Bridgewater College at 1:00 p.m.
