Maryville falls in Battle of Scots, 3-2, despite Wyttenbach, Bonee

Maryville College took a hard-fought loss on Wednesday night in their USA South opener, as Covenant College took a 3-2 victory.

The Georgian Scots fought off a 2-1 Maryville lead and a stellar performance at the net by Arin Wyttenbach and Meredith Bonee.

Wyttenbach tallied seven kills for the match with a team-leading .273 hitting percentage. The sophomore also recorded seven blocks and a dig.

Bonee narrowly missed her second collegiate triple-double. The freshman had 17 digs, 17 assists, seven kills, two service aces and a block.

Covenant College would jump to an early 8-0 advantage in the opening set to force a Maryville College timeout. The Scots rallied off a hard-hit kill by Brianne Sidner to the back line, as MC posted 12 of the next 20 points, 16-12.

However, Covenant would follow Hannah Harris for nine of the next 12 to take set tone, 25-17.

Maryville started things off with an ace from Bonee in the second set, as the two squads battled back and forth for a 4-4 tie. MC would use a pair of kills from Hannah Potts and Rhianna Tyldesley in scoring four straight, before kills from Dejane Hester-Taylor and Madison Wilkerson gave the Scots an 11-7 lead.

Covenant would rally to take the lead, 21-20, eventually forcing a 22-22 score. A pair of kills by Sidner and a Wyttenbach throw down would knot things at 1-all, 25-22.

The Georgian Scots found a 5-4 lead early in set three. A trio of errors and a pair of Hester-Taylor kills gave Maryville a rally, 9-5. Covenant mounted a rally, cutting the score to 12-9. Wyttenbach tossed down a hard kill to end the surge, as MC took the next four with Wyttenbach had a hand in three-straight blocks.

A block by Potts and Wyttenbach, followed by a pair of Covenant errors gave the Orange and Garnet a 25-18 third-set victory.

Maryville and Covenant fought to a 5-5 tie early on, before the Scots from Lookout Mountain, Ga. would score 10 of the next 11 for a 15-6 score. Wyttenbach tallied her seventh block of the match, as Nadia St. Thomas posted a kill and an ace.

MC's rally fell just short, 25-16, to force a fifth and decisive set.

Covenant would take a slight 7-5 lead in the fifth behind a pair of aces. Back-to-back kills from Bonee and Potts knotted things at seven.

The schools would trade points to a 10-all score, before Covenant College would take the final five points for a 15-10 victory.

Maryville College (2-5, 0-1 USA South) was led by Wyttenbach and Bonee, while Sidner had nine kills and 15 digs. Wilkerson added seven kills, nine digs and four blocks, as Hester-Taylor had six kills at a .211 clip.
