Scots advance to USA South semifinals with 5-1 win over Meredith

Maryville College advanced to the semifinals of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots followed a Bailey Sipos hat trick for a 5-1 win over Meredith College.

Sipos – the reigning USA South Player of the Year – posted her third three-goal match of the 2018 season, as Shannon Reagan and Kelsey Green added a goal each for the victory.

Maryville will now travel to Greensboro College on Friday, Nov. 2 to face Covenant College at 3 p.m. The remainder of the tournament will be played in Greensboro, N.C. based on a predetermined rotation.

The Scots struck first in the 22nd minute, as Sipos found her first goal of the match. She took a long pass from Jenna Clothier, as Sipos beat her defender. The sophomore scored her 15th goal of the year with a 6-yard blast to the left side. At the 21:01 mark, MC led 1-0.

Just over five minutes later, Sipos struck again. She drove into the box on the upper right side, as Meredith College fouled her. Sipos took the penalty kick, placing it in the right side of the net for her 16th goal of the season. Maryville held a key 2-0 lead over the fifth-seeded squad from the Eastern Division.

The score would remain 2-0 at the break, as Maryville outshot the Avenging Angels 22-3. MC had eight shots on frame – two of those going for goals – as Meredith had just two.

All-Conference honoree Abbey Coleman turned away both shots she faced in the first 45 minutes of action.

Just 7:50 into the second half, Maryville struck again with First Team Western Division honoree Reagan scoring her eighth goal of the season. The junior collected a long pass from Zoe Van Hook, as she dribbled past the keeper. Reagan had a wide open net from 4 yards to give the Scots a 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

Sipos completed her fifth career hat trick in the 62nd minute. The First Team Overall and First Team Western Division honoree took the goal unassisted from the top right of the box. She hit the upper left of the net at the 61:21 mark, as her 17th goal of the season made the score 4-nil.

In the 86th minute, Green made it a 5-0 match with her fifth goal of the season. Green took a pass from O'Hara on the right side. She crossed to middle left, as Green placed it in the right side.

Meredith College found their only goal of the match in the 89th minute. Amelie Gillies' header off a Lillian Fox corner kick went uncontested.

The Scots took the victory and advanced, 5-1, on the chilly afternoon.

Maryville outshot Meredith, 32-7, in the elimination game. MC scored five times on their 12 shots on frame, while the Avenging Angels managed just a trio of shots on goal.

Maryville (12-5-0) was led by Sipos nine shots. The sophomore had four shots on goal with a trio of goals. Regan had four shots with three on goal, as she added netted a score. Clothier added four shots, a pair on frame and an assist for the Scots. Green had a goal on two shots, as Van Hook and O'Hara each tallied assists on the day.

Meredith (6-8-3) saw Gillies score the Avenging Angels' only goal on a single shot. Molly Thomas had three shots with a pair on goal, as Kirstie King had a pair of shots for Methodist.
