Maryville College's Bailey Sipos recorded her third USA South Player of the Week mention this week, as the sophomore forward led MC to back-to-back USA South Western Division titles.
The Scots claimed the Western Division Regular Season crown with a 2-0 record on the week. The Orange and Garnet finished the 2018 campaign with an unblemished 8-0 mark in conference play and outscoring opponents 32-2 in USA South matches.
Sipos had a trio of goals and an assist on the week, as she recorded her 12th, 13th and 14th goals of the 2018 campaign.
"She continues to be one of the best goal scorers in the conference," Head Coach Pepe Fernandez said. "People are setting up their whole defense to stop her, and she's still managing to get goals and assists. It just shows the quality of player that she is."
The Knoxville, Tenn. native ranks second within the USA South with her 14 goals, as she's tallied 31 points on the season – also a second-place ranking.
She posted a pair of game-winners in the Scots two victories last week – both shutout matches.
Maryville College struck in the 24th minute of the Brevard match, as Sipos collected her 12th goal of the season with a ricocheting shot. The Knoxville, Tenn. native blasted a low shot that pinballed off keeper Hannah Weatherall, the right post and into the net from 23 yards out. With 23:18 on the clock, MC held a 1-0 advantage. That would be the eventual game-winner, 3-0.
Sipos scored her second goal of the contest in the 60th minute, as Zoe Van Hook found her from the midfield circle with a high cross down the right side. Sipos made her defender miss, as she drew Weatherall out of the net. The sophomore notched her 13th goal of the season over the diving keeper with a right-footed blast to the upper left corner. That gave MC a 2-0 lead with 59:35 showing.
Maryville College took the lead in the eighth minute of the LaGrange College match when Sipos took a pass from Shannon Reagan for her second game-winner of the week. The dish was Reagan's fifth assist of her junior campaign while Sipos' goal was the 29th of her career in the Orange and Garnet.
In the 50th minute, Sipos returned the favor by dishing an assist to Reagan. Reagan's goal was her of sixth of the season, while the assist was Sipos' third of the year.
Those victories clinched the Western Division title outright for the Scots.
"You've got to have a goal scorer," Fernandez said. "We're lucky that we've got quite a few, but when you have somebody consistently putting the ball in the net, that's why teams win conference championships."
On the season, Sipos has 14 goals and a trio of assists. She's one goal off her freshman season, as the second-year Scots has 29 career goals and six assist. The Hardin Valley Academy product has 64 career points and eight career game-winning goals with a .553 shots on goal percentage.
Sipos will look to lead the Scots into the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament this weekend. Maryville will host the second round on the Scots' home pitch on Saturday, Oct. 27. A time and opponent will be announced later this week.
