Maryville traveled to USA South preseason favorite Christopher Newport and defeated the Captains 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots got the scoring underway when junior Ashley Howarth scored with the help of senior Hannah Rector. CNU would waste little time tying the game up at one. The deciding goal would be scored before the end of the first half as freshman Sierra Siegel found the back of the net from Lauren Ward. Maryville would hold on to the lead for the whole second half.
Junior Michelle Foulke was instrumental in the victory stopping nine of ten shots by the Captains.
"We went into a hostile environment and got a big USA South victory," said head coach Pepe Fernandez. "Michelle played very well today and our defense did a good job limiting the number of quality chances Christopher Newport was able to get. Ashley and Sierra did a good job of putting the ball on frame and scoring a couple big goals today. I'm very proud of our team."
The win brings Maryville to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in the USA South. The Scots will now travel to Mary Baldwin for a Sunday contest to complete the weekend trip in Virginia. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
