The Maryville College women's basketball team opened their 2019 USA South schedule with a 65-50 win over Brevard College on Wednesday evening on MC's Randy Lambert Court.
Four Scots posted double digit scoring led by Elsa Eckenrod's double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Eckenrod went 3-of-7 from the floor while going 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. Freshman Abbi Joseph added 14 points and eight rebounds on 50-percent shooting from the floor. Junior Klaire Varney tossed in 12 points and seven rebounds while also recording five steals and three assists. Freshman Courtney Carruthers finished with 14 points off the bench while senior Kelley Wandell was strong in the post with six points and five rebounds.
Maryville earned a 51-32 rebound advantage while finishing with a 34-percent shooting effort from the floor. The Scots held Brevard to a 37-percent shooting effort that included yielding only eight points in the first quarter and six points in the third quarter.
Brevard (2-6, 0-2 USA South) was paced by Deja Riddick's 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting. She also added a team-high eight rebounds and eight steals. Mekindia Martin tossed in 10 points for the Tornados.
The victory advances Maryville to 6-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in league play. The Scots will prepare to host Ferrum College in a non-conference challenge on Saturday, December 7 with a scheduled 2:00 tip-off in MC's Cooper Athletic Center.
