The Maryville College women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division III National Tournament with a 68-61 win over Otterbein College in Greencastle, Indiana on Friday evening.
In the first half MC's Kiera Payne (8 points/5 rebounds) and Mackenze Puckett (8 points) helped the Scots shoot 46%, but Otterbein' Hannah Day and her 14 points led the Ohio school to a 29-27 lead at the intermission despite only shooting 35% as a team.
MC point guard Lauren Burnett caught fire and hit three consecutive three-pointer giving the Scots a 55-46 advantage witj eight minutes remaining.
As Otterbein attempted to chip away the lead, freshman Mackenzie Puckett connected on one long distance shot, a break away basket, and five free throws to seal the victory.
Otterbein finishes their season 21-7 behind a game-high 23 points by Hannah Day. Day went 10-for-22 from the field while Tabatha Piper added 13 points.
Maryville (24-4) had four players score double digits in the win. Lauren Burnett went 6-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-8 from beyond the arc for a 17 point evening. Mackenzie Puckett also deposited 17 points while bringing down five boards. Kiera Payne exploded for a double-double hauling down a game-high ten rebounds while going 7-for-11 from the floor for 16 points. Senior Janell Menard chipped in 10 points after sinking 5-of-12 of her shots.
The Scots will advance to play the winner of the Friday evening challenge between tournament host DePauw University and LaRoche College.
The second round tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST on Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana.
