The No.22 ranked Lady Scots of Maryville College cruised to the USA South Tournament semi-finals with a 92-54 win over LaGrange College on Friday evening in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
A 15% shooting effort by the Panthers and a torrid 53% success rate for the Scots gave Maryville a 44-18 halftime lead. The No.3 seeded Scots finished the game going 31-for-58 from the floor while putting on a defensive display that forced 18 LaGrange turnovers. The No. 6 seeded Panthers were held to a 24% connection rate from the floor and fell to 15-11 as their season comes to an end.
Maryville (23-3) was paced by the double-double effort of Tayler Smith. The All-USA South post player went 5-for-6 from the floor en route to a 12 point performance while hauling down a team-high 10 rebounds. First-team All-USA South selection Janell Menard went 4-for8 from the floor and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe for a team-high 18 points. USA South Rookie of the year Mackenzie Puckett contributed 17 points while bringing down seven boards. Alex Bond added 11 points while Kiera Payne and Lauren Burnett tossed in nine and eight points respectively.
The Scots will now challenge No. 18 Christopher Newport University in the league semi-finals. CNU defeated Greensboro 68-41 to advance. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in Fayetteville.
