The No. 25 Lady Scots basketball team traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina to challenge USA South foe Meredith College on Saturday afternoon. A strong second half allowed Maryville to pull away, earning their seventh consecutive road victory, outscoring the Avenging Angels 82-49.
MC shot 46% in the first half to secure a 41-30 lead at the intermission. The Scots finished the game with a stellar defensive effort forcing 24 Meredith miscues and collecting 15 steals while holding the Angels to a 25% shooting effort. The Scots shot 52% from the floor to close out the game while allowing Meredith to score only 19 second half points.
Meredith (6-13, 2-10 USA South) was led by McKenzi Edwards' 17 points while Bryana Holmes dropped a dozen while connecting on 4-of-7 treys. Keyanka Bailey was strong on the boards with nine rebounds to lead her team.
Maryville (17-2, 11-1 USA South) was paced by Kiera Payne's team-high 18 points and nine rebounds. The senior guard went 6-for-9 from the field and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe. Payne also led MC on defense with a game-high six steals. Tayler Smith was strong in the post with 14 points while dishing out five assists and recording four steals. Lauren Burnett tallied 12 points while going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Janell Menard and Mackenzie Puckett each tossed in nine points.
The Scots will conclude their USA South road swing with a game at William Peace on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
