Defense Allows MC to Win "Battle of the Scots"

The Maryville College women's basketball team won the "Battle of the Scots" on Friday evening with an 86-67 victory over Covenant College on MC's Randy Lambert Court.

MC did not shoot the ball extremely well, but compensated with a relentless defensive effort that resulted in 19 steals, forcing 30 Covenant turnovers.

Maryville relinquished the lead on only one occasion and took a 37-32 lead to the half. Their defensive intensity and a 50% shooting effort in the second half allowed them to pull away for the 19 point non-conference win.

Covenant (5-2) was paced by Kiaira Cooper's 18 points and nine rebounds. The Covenant point guard was 6-for-11 from the field. Haley Soles was 6-for-9 for 17 points while Jessie Blankenship went-9-for-12 from the free-throw line for a 15 point evening.

Maryville (4-1) extended their win streak to three games with Janell Menard and Mackenzie Puckett each recording a game-high 20 points. Menard was 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and added five rebounds, four assists, and five steals to her complete evening. Puckett went 8-for-14 from mid-range for her first 20 point collegiate effort. Kiera Payne finished with a dozen points going 4-for-6 from the field. Senior Tayler Smith was strong on the boards with a team-high seven rebounds with six offensive boards.
