The Maryville College women's basketball team won the "Battle of the Scots" on Friday evening with an 86-67 victory over Covenant College on MC's Randy Lambert Court.
MC did not shoot the ball extremely well, but compensated with a relentless defensive effort that resulted in 19 steals, forcing 30 Covenant turnovers.
Maryville relinquished the lead on only one occasion and took a 37-32 lead to the half. Their defensive intensity and a 50% shooting effort in the second half allowed them to pull away for the 19 point non-conference win.
Covenant (5-2) was paced by Kiaira Cooper's 18 points and nine rebounds. The Covenant point guard was 6-for-11 from the field. Haley Soles was 6-for-9 for 17 points while Jessie Blankenship went-9-for-12 from the free-throw line for a 15 point evening.
Maryville (4-1) extended their win streak to three games with Janell Menard and Mackenzie Puckett each recording a game-high 20 points. Menard was 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and added five rebounds, four assists, and five steals to her complete evening. Puckett went 8-for-14 from mid-range for her first 20 point collegiate effort. Kiera Payne finished with a dozen points going 4-for-6 from the field. Senior Tayler Smith was strong on the boards with a team-high seven rebounds with six offensive boards. Lailah Farmer directed the offense with six assists while also recording six steals.
MC will host No.18 Emory University on Saturday in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
