The Maryville College Lady Scots basketball team dropped their first game of the season after No.14 Thomas More College out scored MC 72-56 at the Country Hearth Inn/ Famous Recipe Classic in Danville, Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
MC's Kiera Payne went 6-for-12 from the field for 13 points and completed a double-double effort leading the Scots on the boards with 10 rebounds. Janell Menard paced the Scots with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Maryville collectively deposited 38% of their shots, but their perimeter attack connected at only an 18% rate. Lauren Burnet added eight points while Tayler Smith brought down six rebounds in the paint.
Thomas More claimed the tournament title and advanced to 2-0 on the young season with a 47% shooting effort that included a 9-for-15 rate from beyond the arc.
Maryville was down 34-26 at the half, but battled back to a 36-36 tie at the 17:28 mark in the second half. The Saints' soon found their shooting touch and finished off the second half out scoring MC 38-30 to claim the 12 point victory.
The Scots will now prepare for their home opener on November 26th when they host Birmingham Southern College. Tip-off is slated to be 6:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
