Maryville College's defense held strong, as the forced Huntingdon College to leave seven runners stranded in scoring position for a 9-0 win in five innings.
The win gave MC their 21st of the season, as they are the first USA South team to reach double-digit league wins. The Scots are in the hunt for their first league title since 2009 and their first-ever USA South crown.
MC's Katlyn Smith pitched a gem, going the complete game. The freshman hurler gave up just five hits without a run, as she had six strikeouts. Smith moved to 10-1 on the season.
The Scots were led offensively by Morgan Brewer, as the third baseman went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Huntingdon College would get a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the first, as the Hawks recorded a walk and a single. A pair of steals put them on second and third, before Katlyn Smith was able to strike out the side to end the threat early.
Maryville would strike in the bottom of that inning, however, as a walk and a pair of singles juiced the bags. Rachel Taylor earned her 28th RBI of the season with a bases-loaded walk to plate Morgan Brewer, before Alexus Murray's two-RBI single added a pair more. Essence Strambler and Christina White scored on the play. The Scots would load the bags again, as Ashton Hayden's two-out, two-RBI single up the middle scored Murray and pinch runners Gabrielle Rathmell. The Scots took a 5-0 lead to the second.
Maryville would add a trio more in the inning, as they started with a pair of walks. Taylor Campbell would plate White with an RBI single up the middle. Sarah Gordon would record MC's third multi-RBI hit of the day with her two-RBI shot to center. Murray and Campbell scored to make it an 8-0 Scots' lead after two innings.
MC would make in 9-0 in the bottom of the third with an unearned run. Brewer used a lead-off double to left-center before advancing to third on an error. Strambler singled to short to plate Brewer for a nine-run lead going to the fourth.
A pair of foul outs coupled with Smith's sixth strikeout would end the game, 9-0.
Maryville (21-9, 10-1 USA South) was led by Brewer's effort, as Gordon went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Murray was 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, as Strambler was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Hayden was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI, as Aly Snider went 1-for-1. Campbell was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, as White score two runs. Rathmell had a run, while Taylor added an RBI.
For Huntingdon (15-18, 5-6) it was Alyssa Singleterry who had a 2-for-3 effort in the Hawks' five-hit attack.
The Scots will look next to Agnes Scott College tomorrow, March 31, as they host Senior Day. First pitch of the double header is slated for 12 p.m.
