Maryville College stayed undefeated in USA South play on Tuesday afternoon, as the Scots toppled LaGrange in a pair of shutouts.
MC knocked off the Panthers, 11-0, in the first game, before toppling LaGrange, 6-0, in the nightcap.
Essence Strambler slapped her second home run of the series and her fifth of the season. She improved her season batting average by 15 points through two games, as she now holds a .473 mark to lead the squad.
The sophomore left fielder has 20 RBI on the season to lead the Scots, as her five dinkers rank second in the USA South.
Both Strambler and Christina White went 2-for-4 on the day to lead the Scots, as they both had two RBI. White added two runs on the day, as Strambler tallied one.
Freshman Katlyn Smith moved to 5-1 in the circle, as she pitched the complete game. She allowed just five hits, while scattering seven strikeouts. Smith did not walk a batter in the shutout victory.
Maryville College and Piedmont College rank tied atop the USA South Western Division. Both schools have compiled 4-0 marks within USA South play this year.
In the first two innings, the Scots pushed runners to third base in each block. Maryville failed to score, however, until they were able to plate a run in the bottom of the third.
Morgan Brewer laced a single through the left side, before she stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. White placed a perfect safety squeeze bunt single, as Brewer slid under the tag for the first run of the ball game. Rachel Taylor drew a walk, before Taylor Campbell's RBI double to deep right field made the score 2-0 going to the fourth.
Strambler would continue her dominance at the plate. The sophomore blasted her fifth homer of the season – and her second of the series. The two-run shot plated White who singled to lead off the inning. Taylor was hit-by-pitch, before pinch-runner Gabrielle Rathmell was moved to second on a groundout. Alexus Murray pushed an RBI single to center to score Rathmell, putting the Scots up 5-0 going to the sixth.
The Scots would add to the scoreboard again. Back-to-back singles by Ashton Hayden and Brewer put runners on second and third. White would groundout to earn the RBI, plating Hayden from third. It would be enough for the 6-0 victory.
Maryville (11-6, 4-0 USA South) was led by White and Strambler, as Brewer also went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Campbell was 2-for-3 with an RBI, as Murray, Gordon and Hayden added hits. Murray had an RBI, as Rathmell and Hayden each scored a run.
LaGrange (7-15, 5-3) saw their five-hit afternoon led by Brittany Todd. Todd went 2-for-3 on the day.
Maryville College will look next to a weekend USA South road swing. They travel to Covenant College on Friday, March 16, before taking the swing to Berea College on Sunday, March 18. Both doubleheaders are slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
