The Maryville College men's soccer program traveled to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to challenge USA South Athletic Conference rival Covenant College on Saturday evening. In a battle of the top defensive squads statistically in the league, Covenant College earned a 1-0 victory over MC.
In a physical match that featured 30 combined fouls and seven cards, the shot totals for each squad favored Covenant 12-11. Maryville tallied seven strikes on goal to only one for Covenant as Covenant keeper Paul Lemay turned away each MC attempt on net.
The only score in the match came in the 76th minute following a Maryville foul within striking distance in the goalie crease for the host Scots. Covenant's Jesse Riggs placed a penalty kick into the upper left corner of the net for the eventual game-winner. The goal was his fourth of the season.
Maryville attempted to equalize throughout the second half, but Covenant's seventh shutout of the season advanced the match host to an 11-2-1 overall mark and 8-0 in league play. Maryville falls to 9-5 overall and 7-2 in USA South action.
Maryville will return to action on Homecoming weekend next week. The Scots will host Methodist University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 and then conclude Homecoming festivities on Sunday with a 3:30 match against North Carolina Wesleyan College.
