Maryville College's Trevor McDonald deposited the golden goal to complete a hat trick and help the Scots to defeat USA South rival Piedmont College 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday evening on MC's home pitch.
The Lions lit up the scoreboard in the 9th minute when Jose Linares directed a pass that drew the Scots' keeper forward in the crease. Cameron Earls directed the keeper miscue into the net for his sixth goal of the season to give Piedmont a 1-0 advantage.
Maryville drove home the equalizer less than three minutes later. Johnny Rakhmonberdiev directed a blast that Piedmont's keeper saved, but Trevor McDonald collected the rebound striking his fifth goal of the season.
Piedmont went up 2-1 in the 35th minute. Maryville keeper Mykal Manfred punched out a stray ball, but Tyler Goins collected the ball just beyond the top of the box and collected his first goal of the season into the open net.
The Scots answered just 30-seconds later with a Davis Clothier goal. Caleb Platillero did a long ground cross and Clothier collected the deflection and placed a right-footed strike into the top right of the net.
The match went 2-2 into the half with Maryville outshooting the Lions 10-3.
Piedmont took the lead 3-2 just before the 63rd minute when Jared Williams connected on an unassisted goal from 25-yards out. His perfectly placed loft hit the top of the net just past the outstretched MC keeper.
Maryville tallied their third equalizer in the 82nd minute when Ndubueze Henry streaked down the left side placing a long cross to Trevor McDonald. McDonald secured the brace with a header into the net for his sixth goal of the season.
The Scots outshot Piedmont 5-0 in the overtime period before Austin Vinyard took a shot that glanced off the right post. McDonald trapped the rebound in the 94th minute and pushed the golden goal past the keeper at point blank range to secure the victory. The strike was McDonald's seventh goal of the season.
Piedmont falls to 4-5-1 on the season and 3-4-1 in USA South play while Maryville advances to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in USA South challenges.
Maryville will resume league action on Saturday in Lookout Mountain, Georgia when they challenge Covenant College at 7:00 p.m.
