Scots tally best-ever score at Callaway to finish day one tied for 11th

Maryville College opened the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate on Monday with the best score the Scots have ever posted in the tournament to end day one tied for 11th.

The Scots tallied a 16-over par 304 in the opening day, improving 11 shots over their best score in the six previous tournaments in Pine Mountain, Ga. Maryville has never finished the Callaway Gardens Invitational better than 13th, as they sit in prime position for day two, just one shot off 10th place.

The Scots' Tyler Bray and Wil Manuel carded matching 74s on the afternoon, as they both rank as the second-best score by a Scots golfer in the tournament history. Both golfers are tied for 26th individually.

Only Joel Thornton's one-over 73 in 2014 ranked as a better score for Maryville in the Callaway tournament.

Oglethorpe University leads the first round with a three-under 285, while Methodist University (+2, 290) and LaGrange College (+3, 291) rank second and third.

MC sits tied for 11th with Hampden-Sydney College and Christopher Newport University. All three schools are just one shot off Wittenberg University in 10th place.

Emory University's Matt Organisak and Rhodes College's Corrie Kuehn rank tied for the lead with matching 3-under-par 69s.

Bray and Manuel lead the Scots with their scores of 74, as senior Doug Whitten added a six-over 78 to match Garrett Compliment for a tie in 63rd place. Compliment had a trio of birdies on the afternoon to lead Maryville in that category, while Hunter DeSena scored an eight-over 80 for a 76th-place tie.

The Scots will look to complete at top-10 finish tomorrow, March 5, as they take to the 6,934-yard Mountain View course for round two.
