Maryville College Golfers Ready for Spring Opener

Maryville College Golfers Ready for Spring Opener

On March 5-6 the Maryville College men's golf team will open their spring season at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate on the Mountain Course at Callaway Gardens Georgia.

Callaway Gardens will host an imposing field of 16 teams that will include nine of the top 25 ranked Division III teams in the country.

The Scots are entering the spring season after an outstanding fall campaign.  The team's 296.42 per round scoring average is the best in school history by almost 12 strokes.  During the fall the Scots achieved the programs all-time highest national ranking at 33rd in the country before ending the fall ranked 34th.

The Scots are ranked 5th among USA South teams.  USA South has four teams ranked in the top 17 in the nation and are led by No.2 Huntingdon College and No.5 Methodist University.

Freshman Tyler Bray from Lutz, Florida led the Scots in scoring during the fall with a 71.75 scoring average which ranks as the lowest in school history.  During the fall, Bray was a three-time selection as USA South Rookie of the Week.

The rest of the Scots line-up will include the team's lone senior Doug Whitten and his 74.42 scoring average.  Junior Wil Manuel 75.89, sophomore Garrett Compliment 75.75 and freshman Hunter DeSena 79.9.

Scots picked fifth in USA South Preseason Poll

Huntingdon College, under the direction of sixth-year Head Coach Dave Schreyer, was picked to win the USA South Athletic Conference 2018 golf title in the preseason coaches poll. Last spring, the Hawks placed third at the USA South Tournament then finished tied for fourth at the NCAA Division III National Championship. Huntingdon received eight of 12 first-place votes and 118 points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting for the USA South preseason poll.

This season, the Conference welcomes new League members Berea College, Brevard College and Pfeiffer University. Brevard and Pfeiffer will not be included in the poll as they are each reclassifying from Division II and are not eligible for championship honors this season.

Methodist University, two-time defending USA South champions, ranked second in the poll with 114 points and the remaining four first-place votes. N.C. Wesleyan College placed third in the voting with 94 points while Greensboro College wasn't far behind in fourth with 88 points. Maryville College was picked fifth with 76 points while Ferrum College grabbed 69 points to place sixth and round out the top-half of the poll.

The 2018 spring season gets underway on Monday, February 12th as Covenant competes in the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational.

The 2018 USA South Golf Tournament will be played April 12-14 at the Highland Country Club in LaGrange, Georgia as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival, hosted by the City of LaGrange and Troup County. The top-nine Conference teams according to the April 4th Golfstat rankings will advance to the tournament. Additionally, the top-three golfers, according to the April 4th Golfstat rankings, from teams which did not qualify for the tournament shall compete as individuals.
