The Maryville College men's golf team opened a two-day event on Monday at Tennessee National during the Bojangles Tennessee Intercollegiate Invitational. The Scots completed the 6,954-yard course in 308 strokes during the first-round finishing 5th of 17 institutions on day one.
Dalton State posted the tournament's top team round with a 281, seven-under-par collective effort.
Individually, Dalton State's P.J. Shields recorded a four-under-par 68 to pace the field. Ben Kendrick (University of the Cumberlands) and Sport Allmond (Dalton State) are only one shot off the lead.
Maryville was paced by Tyler Bray's two-over-par 74. The score placed Bray tied for 15th after day one. A trio of Scots tallied a six-over-par to collectively place 31st at the turn. Doug Whitten, Wil Manuel, and Garrett Compliment settled for a 78 on a windy and blustery day.
"Tennessee National is a very demanding golf course," stated Maryville College Head Golf Coach Ron Waters. "When the wind gets to blowing the way it was today, it is a very difficult test. We started on the 10th hole and struggled on our first nine. I am very pleased with our position and hope that we can get off to a good start in the morning on the front nine."
