The Maryville College men's basketball team rallied for a 70-61 USA South victory over Berea College on Wednesday evening. The win marks the 20th consecutive home victory in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The Scots' defense held the Mountaineers to a 29% shooting effort (9-for-31) that included a 3-for-14 success rate (21%) from beyond the arc in the first half. Berea's Deandre Lightfoot paced the visitors with seven points on 3-of-10 shooting. Maryville finished 11-for-30 from the floor including a 0-of-10 effort from the perimeter. Daquan Summers led MC off the bench with six points on 3-of-5 shooting. Maryville took a slim 26-24 lead into the intermission.
Calvin Songster's 18-point second half performance helped the Scots pull away. The junior dropped 6-of-7 shots from the floor including a 5-for-6 effort from long distance. Berea kept pace with a 55% shooting effort (16-of-29) from the floor and 5-for-9 from three-point territory. Mitchell Embree came off the bench to help the Mountaineers with 11 points on a trio of treys.
Berea (6-11, 3-7 USA South) was led by three players in double-digit scoring. Embree went 4-of-7 for 13 points while Chris Spratling added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Deandre Lightfoot added 10 points. The Mountaineers finished 25-of-60 from the floor and only 8-of-23 from the perimeter.
Maryville (14-4, 10-0 USA South) claimed their third consecutive victory on Songster's game-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He finished 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point line. Colt Nokes added 11 points in the post with a 3-for-9 shooting effort. He was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Emier Bowman and Daquan Summers each tossed in eight points. Bowman added five assists, seven steals, and a pair of blocks to his total effort. Summers dished out four assists while grabbing a pair of steals.
Maryville will return to action next Wednesday in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. MC will challenge USA South foe Covenant College at 7:00 p.m.
