The Maryville College Scots fell in their USA South opener on Saturday, as the Tornados used a 19-point second half to earn a 22-10 victory.
Maryville outgained Brevard, 191-150 on the day, as the Scots' defense held strong on the rushing attack. The Scots gave up just 29 yards rushing on 26 total attempts on Saturday, as a pair of turnovers proved costly.
The Scots were led by Jacob Bunch on the ground, as the back totaled 129 yards in 24 carries. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry, as Caden Harbin scored his first MC touchdown at quarterback with a rush in the first half. Harbin added 17-of-31 passing for 100 yards on the afternoon, as well.
Senior Ian Hubbs was 1-of-1 on the day with a 36-yard boot, as he added a perfect 1-for-1 effort on extra points.
For Brevard, it was Dalton Cole who went 9-of-17 for 100 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Norris had one catch for 36 yards, as Damon Rouse had two catches for 20 yards and a score. Rook Tate added a touchdown across the ground for Brevard.
Maryville College (0-4, 0-1 USA South) led the scoring off with a 16 play, 82-yard drive that took 9:02. Bunch had a run of 9 yards in the drive, while Harbin found Austin Burke for a 9-yard reception. Harbin found Ogle for a 9-yard catch to set the Scots up with first-and-goal at the Brevard 3, before MC punched it in. Harbin completed the drive with a 1-yard run – his first touchdown as a Scot. Hubbs' kick made it 7-0 at the 12:20 mark of the second quarter.
Brevard College (3-0, 1-0) scored late to end the half. The Tornados used a nine-play, 72-yard drive that took 4:45. However, the Scots' defense held strong on the one, as Cole was sacked by Ware and Jackson for a 2-yard loss. Brevard settled for a field goal with two second remaining, leaving the score a 7-3 at the half.
A fumble on a punt proved costly for Maryville, as Rook Tate found the touchdown. Tate recovered the fumble in the end zone, as Stamati Damalos' kick was good for a 10-7 Brevard lead at the 10:50 mark of the third.
Another fumble on a punt attempt late in the third proved costly, as Brevard was credited with a safety on the play. With 1:42 left, Brevard led 12-7.
A Tornado face mask penalty kept the Scots' drive in the fourth alive, after MC threw an interception. The six-play, 19-yard drive ended with a 36-yard field goal by Hubbs, as Maryville cut the lead to two, 12-10, at the 10:43 mark of the fourth quarter.
On Brevard's next drive, the Tornados would find pay dirt. The five-play, 34-yard drive took 2:31, as Cole found Rouse for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Damalos added a 30-yard field goal with 4:21 left, making the final, 22-10.
The Scots will be on the road again next week, as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. MC faces Huntingdon College at 1:00 p.m. central, 2:00 p.m. eastern.
