Maryville College's Kris Hawkins earned USA South Offensive Rookie of the Week, as the Dandridge, Tenn., native averaged 12.6 yards per carry against No. 18 Centre College.
Hawkins – a 5-foot-10, 165-pound back – ranked second on the squad with 88 yards on seven carries.
"Kris has got so much ability," Head Coach Shaun Hayes said. "He reminds me a lot of Trenton Shuler and how he played as a freshman – his body length, his balance, his vision. He's got speed. Actually, he got caught on the turf twice, and if he hadn't, who knows? As a freshman, walking in the door early on in the season and being able to burst on the scene the way he did, it brings a lot of excitement and energy to our football team and to our coaching staff."
The freshman – coupled with sophomore back and USA South Player of the Week Jacob Bunch – helped the Scots to 329 yards rushing against the nationally-ranked squad. MC followed its offensive line for a 6.7 yards per carry average over the Colonels.
Hawkins was key in a late drive for the Scots that pulled them to within one score of Centre. Facing 2nd-and-12, the freshman used a 20-yard rush for a first down and a career long.
Two plays later, he doubled that mark with a 42-yard jaunt to the Centre College 19-yard line. Hawkins' two runs set up a 44-yard field goal by USA South Special Teams Player of the Week Ian Hubbs at the 8:32 mark.
"It was huge, because it gave us an opportunity to make it a one-possession game and have a chance to win," Hayes said. "That's the one that I thought he had broken. He pulled ahead, and the turf held him up. I guarantee that if it was on natural grass, he's gone. We now know the ability he and Jacob possess in the open field and between the tackles. It makes us a very dangerous and versatile offense running the ball."
Hawkins ranks second on the 2019 squad with 96 yards on 11 carries. He leads the Scots with 8.7 yards per carry over two games this season.
Hawkins looks to lead the Scots this weekend, as Maryville hosts Hanover College on Honaker Field. Kickoff for the non-conference game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
