Maryville College outgained Centre College with 435 total yards, but the Colonels were able to thwart MC's home opener, 40-6.
Maryville rolled up 257 rushing yards to just 79 for Centre, but a pair of blocked kicks and penalties slowed the Scots on the day.
Smith – a Goodlettsville, Tenn. native – went 14-of-25 for 123 yards on the day, as he added 22 yards on 12 carries. He also posted his first collegiate touchdown with a 1-yard scamper in the opening quarter.
The Lindale, Ga. native – Thomas – managed to cross the 100-yard plateau across the ground. He averaged 8.2 yards per carry, as the quarterback tallied 107 yards on 13 carries. Thomas also completed a trio of passes for 55 yards through the air.
MC would win the time of possession battle with 35:48.
Centre College followed quarterback Tanner Young, as he went 13-of-27 for 349 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He saw both Mack Cox (2 for 117 yards) and Jaylon Hibbs (4 for 115) have 100-yard receiving games, as the Colonels averaged 8.1 yards per play in the game.
Center College (2-0) would score first on the opening drive of the game. Young would find Cody Estep for a 61-yard completion on the first play, before Maryville's defense would hold strong on the 10-yard line. The Scots forced a 26-yard field goal from Ben Logsdon for a 3-0 score with 13:26 left in the first quarter.
Maryville (0-2) would answer on their next drive. Smith led the way for the Scots, as he amassed 27 yard through the air and 16 yards on the ground. Marcus Pierce and Rodney Murray would also find holes in the Centre defense, before Smith would complete the 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring run.
That play would give Maryville the lead, 6-3, with 9:40 showing on the clock. Centre's Andre Evans would block the PAT, as John Wilson returned it the length of the field. The two-point play would make the score 6-5.
Centre would take the lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter, as Young led a seven-play, 45-yard drive. Colin Burnam would cross the final 8 yards of the drive on the ground for a 12-6 score.
Maryville put together another lengthy drive that spanned 10 plays and 73 yards. The Scots would stall at the 20, as MC's 37-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Estep. Nate Johnson returned the ball 69 yards for a touchdown, as Centre would lead 19-6 with 14:00 left in the first half.
With 11:44 showing, the Colonels would find the end zone again. A 46-yard completion and a Maryville penalty put Centre at the MC 13-yard line, as Trevor Carnell would score on a 13-yard run for a 26-6 lead.
Young would find Hibbs with 5:30 left in the half for a 43-yard touchdown, as the Colonels would take a 33-6 lead to the break.
Young found Cox in the third quarter to make the final score, 40-6.
Maryville College will take to the road next weekend, as they travel to take on Washington & Lee University. Kickoff in Lexington, Va. is slated for 1 p.m.
