Methodist needs extra innings to top Scots 4-3

Methodist University, the No. 21 ranked squad within the NCAA Division III, needed a walk-off RBI triple by Tucker Criswell to lift the Monarchs past Maryville College 4-3 in extra innings on Saturday evening in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Methodist took a 2-0 in the first inning when Alex Kachler singled up the middle with two outs. Criswell walked before the pair scored two unearned runs on a Maryville miscue.

The Scots cut the lead in half in the third inning when Kolton Hicks singled to right-field and advanced to third on a failed pickoff. Gabe Lopez lofted a flyball down the right-field line to score Hicks on a sacrifice fly making the score 2-1.

Maryville took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning after Ryan Jones singled and Cody Gregory walked. Drew Johnson placed a beautiful sacrifice bunt to advance Jones and pinch runner Ian Campbell. Methodist committed an infield error on contact by Lopez sending Jones and Campbell home with a pair of unearned runs.

Methodist sent the game to a 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the eighth when Kachler led off with a single before Ethan Carmack snuck a backside flair through the left side scoring pinch runner Elliot Manley.

Criswell's walk-off advanced Methodist to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in USA South action. Maryville falls to 11-8 overall and 4-5 in league play.

Maryville's Jordan Davis had a quality start allowing no earned runs over 6.2 innings scattering just three while striking out eight Monarchs. Zach Messinger suffered the mound loss allowing a pair of earned runs in 2.1 innings on four hits.

The series will conclude on Sunday in Fayetteville with a 1:00 first pitch.
