Scots take opener over Wittenberg 6-4

The Maryville College baseball team took a 6-2 lead into the final inning and held on for a thrilling 6-4 victory over Wittenberg University on Wednesday afternoon on MC's Scotland Yard.


The visiting Tigers got on the scoreboard in their first inning when Matt Baker scored on an RBI groundout by Patrick Kenny.


Maryville evened the score with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Peyton Sawyer scampered home on an Augustus Fraley sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 1-1.


The Scots took the lead for good in the fourth inning pushing a trio of runs across the plate. Fraley plated his second RBI with a fielder's choice scoring Drew Johnson. Nelson Smith and Fraley scored on a two-RBI single up the middle by Christian Poulsen.


With the score 4-1, Maryville added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning when Nelson Smith and Matthew Petzelt scored on a Cody Gregory double to centerfield.


The Tigers rallied in their final plate appearance with a trio of runs in the seventh. Jack Siefert, Mason Davis, and Gage Carpenter each had key RBI's before MC's Samuel Joiner closed the game on the mound for the Scots.


Maryville's DJ Cooper (1-0) earned the mound victory after scattering four hits and allowing only one earned run during a four-inning start. Trevor Townsend and Joiner had strong relief efforts to push the Scots to 6-6 on the season.


The loss moves Wittenberg to 4-2.


MC's seven-hit attack was paced by Christian Poulsen (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Nelson Smith (2-for-3, 2 runs scored.
