The Maryville College baseball team traveled to Fayetteville, North Carolina to challenge No.17 Methodist University for a season-ending three-game series. The Scots (26-12) dropped a pair of games on Saturday 12-4, 9-4 to the Monarchs (29-11).
During the first matchup, MC senior outfielder Johnny Carpenter finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, but the remainder of the roster added only five hits while the Monarchs tallied a dozen runs on an 11-hit attack.
A four-run first inning and a six-run fifth inning allowed Methodist to pull away.
The Scots trailed only 3-2 after the first three innings in the second challenge, but a three-run fourth and a run in each of the Monarchs' final three at-bats gave Methodist a five-run victory.
Senior right-hander Ricky Ward (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing six runs on three hits over 3.1 innings of work. Samuel Joiner did not allow an earned run in relief while striking out four while Zach McGee added a shutout inning on the mound.
Offensively, Maryville out-hit their hosts with seven hits led by Mike Homan's 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Alden Wright singled to centerfield in the third inning for a pair of RBI. Patrick Messinger added a two-RBI single in the sixth to complete the Scots' scoring.
The series finale will be on Methodist's Armstrong-Shelley Field on Sunday. First-pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
