Poulsen's relief, Carpenter's blast lift Scots over NC Wesleyan 10-5

Maryville College's Christian Poulsen took the ball in relief in the third inning and earned his second mound victory of the season helping the Scots defeat USA South foe North Carolina Wesleyan College 10-5 in the second game of a league doubleheader on MC's Scotland Yard on Saturday evening.


The Battling Bishops went up 3-0 in the second inning when Logan Andrews doubled off MC starter Evan Heffner scoring Caleb Narron and Trey Croom. NC Wesleyan chased MC's starter after Alec Titmus singled to opposite field driving in Nick Beaver.


The Scots rallied in the bottom of the inning when third baseman Mike Homan blasted a home run onto Honaker Field scoring Alden Wright. After a pair of innings, the Bishops led 3-2.


In the fourth Wesleyan extended their lead to 5-2 when Brad Pennington doubled off Mc reliever Christian Poulsen scoring Cedrick Kornegay and Logan Andrews.


MC's Poulsen simple shut down the Bishop offense the remainder of the game. Over seven complete innings, the right-hander scattered six hits allowed only a pair of runs while striking out four.


Maryville's offense answered in the fourth when Mike Homan scored on a wild pitch before Hayden Hollingsworth drove in Evan Ezell with a groundout. After four complete innings, Mc trailed 5-4.


The Scots took the lead for good in the sixth inning when an RBI single by Jake Petersen scored Hollingsworth. MC got runners on first and second before Johnny Carpenter clubbed a three-run dinger over the left field bleachers to give MC a 6-5 lead. The hosts closed the inning with an RBI single by Ezell making the score 7-5.


MC tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Carpenter doubled down the left field line scoring Andrew Henry.


Maryville's 11-hit attack was paced by Mike Homan's 3-for-4 effort. He added a pair of RBI. Johnny Carpenter and Alden Wright each went 2-for-4 with Carpenter finishing with a game-high 4 RBI.


The Scots (9-1, 1-1 USA South) will host NC Wesleyan for the final game of their USA South series on Sunday on Scotland Yard. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
