Scots claim season opener behind Hurt, Carpenter, Ezell's offense

The Maryville College diamondmen opened the 2017 campaign with a 10-6 victory over Johnson University on MC's Scotland Yard on Saturday evening.

Six Fighting Scots pitchers combined to scatter seven hits while the MC offense tallied seven runs driven in on eleven hits.

A trio of early errors by Johnson put the Scots up 3-0 before Evan Ezell laced a line drive sacrifice fly to right field scoring Johnny Carpenter to make the score 4-0.

Ezell drove in MC's fifth and sixth run with a single up the middle in the sixth inning.

Centerfielder Derek Hurt deposited his first career home run into deep right-center field in the seventh inning driving home Caleb Adams. Alden Wright laced a pinch-hit double down the left field line scoring pinch runner Hayden Hollingsworth.

Maryville's offense was paced by Derek Hurt (3-for-6, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Johnny Carpenter (3-for-3, 3 runs, 2 walks). Ezell finished 1-for-3 with a game-high three RBI.

MC's Evan Heffner went three innings in the start surrendering three hits and three earned runs. Jordan Norton tossed a pair of one-hit innings while Samuel Joiner earned the win with 1.1 innings of quality work. Zach McGee, Zach Messinger, and Joe Jones closed out the final 2.2 innings allowing only a pair of hits collectively.

Maryville will now prepare to travel to Jackson, Mississippi next weekend to challenge Trinity (Texas), Millsaps, and Texas-Tyler.
