Scots split on opening day of Charlie Wrublewski Invitational Tournament

The Maryville College volleyball team advanced to a 4-3 record with a split on the opening day of the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational Tournament on the campus of Mt. Saint Joseph College in Cincinnati, Ohio. Maryville defeated the tournament host Mt. Saint Joseph 3-1 before falling to Thomas More College 3-0.

Against the Lions in their first challenge, Maryville relied on a dozen kills by Kelsey Handel to fight back from an early 18-25 first set setback. MC outscored their host 25-9, 25-22, and 25-22 to earn the victory. Kara Strickland added eight kills while adding four service aces and 18 defensive digs. Mallory Bonee paced the defense with 24 digs while Teri Lind led the offense with 36 assists. Handel was also strong at the net on defense with a team-high eight solo blocks.

In the nightcap, the Saints swept the Scots by the scores of 25-13, 25-19, 25-20. Mallory Bonee was strong on defense with 17 digs, but MC could only accumulate 11 total team kills. Handel and Strickland each had three kills for the Scots.

Maryville will conclude tournament action on Saturday when they challenge Heidelberg and Birmingham Southern.
