Lady Scots defeat Bishops 2-1 for key USA South Victory

The Maryville College women's soccer team advanced to 4-2-1 on the season and 2-1 in USA South challenges with a strong 2-1 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College at home on Friday afternoon.

Following six shots on goal and a strong defensive effort that allowed no first half shots by the Bishops, Maryville went to the half tied to a scoreless draw.

The Scots lit up the scoreboard in the 76th minute when Lydia Fuson connected with Sierra Siegel as the sophomore hit the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season.

Only five minutes later, Monica Besbris assisted Taylor Emerson with her first goal of the season.

The Bishops got on the scoreboard in the 86th minute when Jade Gold hit one of their three shots on goal for the match past MC goalkeeper Mandy Marshall to make the score 2-1.

Maryville finished with 15 shots on goal while their stingy defense held NC Wesleyan to only three second half attacks on goal.

The Scots will return to action tomorrow when they host Mary Baldwin on campus at 4:00 p.m.
