Five Scots post double-digit scoring in 83-47 USA South victory over Agnes Scott

Maryville College had five players post double-digit scoring to help the Scots push past USA South foe Agnes Scott College 83-47 on Saturday in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

 

Maryville took a 38-28 lead into the half with Brooke McCurdy dropping eight points while Klaire Varney added seven points, four assists, and five steals in 15 minutes of action. Agnes Scott kept pace with a 42% shooting effort (11-for-26) from the floor and 11 points from Garis Grant. The Scots shot 42% from beyond the arc (5-for-12) that included a pair of treys each by McCurdy and Catherine Upshaw.

 

MC pulled away in the third quarter holding the Scotties to only 12 points while scoring 26 points on 56% shooting (10-for-18) that included a 4-for-8 effort from downtown. Shelby Hix went 3-for-3 from the floor for six points off the bench in the quarter.

 

The Scots closed the game holding Agnes Scott to only seven fourth-quarter points on 2-of 12 shooting (17%).

 

Agnes Scott (1-19, 1-10 USA South) was paced by Garis Grant's 15 points and 10 rebounds. While shooting 6-for-10 from the floor she also recorded a trio of blocks. Shay Sweat added eight points off the bench for the Scotties.

 

Maryville (9-10, 7-3 USA South) was led by point guard Libby Gardner with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting. She tallied four rebounds, five assists, and three steals for a complete game effort. Brooke McCurdy deposited four treys while finishing with 14 points. Catherine Upshaw was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc for 14 points off the bench. Klaire Varney added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out six assists, and recording a game-high nine steals. Shelby Hix went 4-for-6 from the floor for 11 points while Kelley Wandell and Elsa Eckenrod combined for 11 rebounds.

 

The Scots will take their two-game win streak into Sunday when they host USA South opponent Wesleyan College (Ga.) Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game will feature the memory of former Scots Brittany Johnson. Fans will be encouraged to wear yellow and donate to the Brittany Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund that gives a scholarship to a local Maryville College student.
