The Maryville College women's basketball team fell to Otterbein College in the consolation game of the Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington, Kentucky by the score of 63-60.
In the first half, Maryville's Madison Maples dropped a trio of three-pointers for 11 points helping the Scots tally 29 first half points. Otterbein's Kiersten Taylor answered with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. At the intermission, Otterbein led the Scots 32-29.
Otterbein outpaced MC 16-12 in the third quarter, but the Scots would look to close out the game strong.
With 5:41 remaining in the game, MC's Rachel Hawn hit a running jumper making the score 52-49. Libby Gardner's four free throws kept MC close before an Amber Hudgens left-side layup and a Lauren Biliter basket pulled MC to within a basket (60-58) with 1:09 remaining. Maryville's Madison Maples was fouled and sank a pair of free throws to make the score 61-60, but Otterbein closed with a key steal to thwart any last second heroics.
Otterbein (3-2) was paced by Kiersten Taylor's 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting. Ali Cartnal added 16 points while sinking 8-of-9 free throws. Taylor completed the double-double effort with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Maryville (0-4) was led by Madison Maples' 18 points on 3-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Lauren Biliter was 6-for-12 from the field for 17 points. Rachel Hawn pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while sinking nine points.
The Scots will prepare to take on Brevard College in North Carolina on Wednesday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
