The Maryville College women's basketball team dropped their second challenge of the season with an 86-76 loss to the Colonels of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky on Saturday evening.
The Scots secured an early 22-18 advantage in the first quarter, but Centre closed out the second quarter on a 10-1 run going to the half with a 41-36 lead.
At the intermission, Centre was paced by Paige Kellam's 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting while Kathleen Wilson added 10 points. Maryville was led by Libby Gardner's 4-of-5 shooting for nine points.
Centre opened the second half on a strong 10-0 run. A Kathleen Wilson trey gave the Colonels a 15-point advantage (51-36) at the 7:57 mark. A Madison Maples steal and bucket pulled MC to within six, but Centre finished the third period with another Wilson three-pointer and an eleven-point advantage (60-49) with one final period to play.
Maryville would pull to within five following a Rachel Hawn rebound and basket, but Centre would not waiver on the charity stripe going 24-for-30 (80%) for the game.
The Colonels outrebounded Maryville 41-29 and the Scots did not take advantage at the free-throw line going 17-for-29 (58%).
Centre (2-0) was led by Kathleen Wilson's 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc in route to a game-high 29 points. Paige Kellam finished with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Olivia Schad and Abigail Stewart each added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Maryville (0-2) had sophomore point guard Libby Gardner post a career-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Rachel Hawn added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kelley Wandell and Lauren Biliter tossed in 11 points and 10 points respectively.
The Scots will travel to Lexington, Kentucky next weekend to participate in the Pat Deacon Thanksgiving Tournament on the campus of Transylvania University. Maryville will challenge Westminster, Missouri on Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
