Maryville College was swept by N.C. Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon, as the Battling Bishops took both non-conference games.
N.C. Wesleyan scored two first-inning runs in the opening game for a 3-1 win, before they used a six-run fifth inning to win 6-4 in game two.
Maryvillle will now travel back to Methodist University, as the Scots will finish the second game yesterday's double-header. The game was halted in the top of the fifth with Maryville leading 9-2 over the Monarchs. The game is scheduled to resume at approximately 7 p.m.
In the opening game of the day, Maryville outhit the Battling Bishops, 7-4, but left nine runners stranded.
A walk, a single and a pair of stolen bases put two runners in scoring position for N.C. Wesleyan early. Beth Braswell found a two-RBI single to give the North Carolina foe at 2-0 lead, scoring Nichole Mooney and pinch runner Meredith Smith.
N.C. Wesleyan added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Brianna Myers' RBI single for the 3-1 win.
N.C. Wesleyan was led by Braswell who was 1-for-2 with two RBI, while Mooney was 1-for-2 with two runs.
In the day's second game, Maryville jumped out early to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. An Alexus Murray walk and a Campbell single put runners on for MC, as Gordon came through with a two-RBI single. Murray and Ashleigh Geary both scored on the play.
The Battling Bishops found six runs in the bottom of the fifth to hold on for the win. A walk was followed by five-consecutive singles. Hannah Ivester and Mooney had back-to-back RBI singles, before Braswell's bases-loaded RBI single made the score 3-2. Smith added a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to make the score 6-2 after five innings.
Maryville rallied in the seventh, as Campbell and Ballard recorded RBI for a 6-4 final.
MC was led by Campbell who went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Gordon was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Smith led N.C. Wesleyan with a 1-for-3 day and a trio of RBI. Ivester was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Shelby Godwin went 2-for-3.
