Maryville College needed only three hits to overcome a pair of errors on Friday morning, as they advanced past the No. 2-seeded Salem College in the USA South Tournament, 5-4.
The Scots gave up a trio of unearned runs in the game, but overcame the obstacle with only three hits. MC was highlighted by a key triple from Morgan Brewer to plate a run in the fourth, before Brewer scored on an Alexus Murray sacrifice fly in the victory.
MC will advance to play Huntingdon College today at 2 p.m. in another elimination game.
Maryville struck first in the bottom of the second, recording a pair of runs without a hit. Morgan Brewer recorded a hit-by-pitch, before Alexus Murray was able to reach on a fielder's choice. Aly Snider sacrificed both runners over, as Brewer tallied a run on a wild pitch. Murray scored on a Christina White groundout, as the Scots led 2-0 going to the third.
Salem would get on the board during the bottom of the second. Jennifer Vitarelli walked, before reaching scoring position with a steal. Amanda Dacunto plated her with an RBI single to center, as Maryville led 2-1 going to the third.
Salem would ride a pair of Maryville miscues. Brittany Morton doubled to right to lead off the inning, before a pair of errors on sacrifice bunts would prove costly. Breanna Herman's sacrifice bunt was errantly thrown to score Morton, before the same play by Sydney Vaughn put runners on the corners. A strikeout wild pitch loaded the bags with no outs. The Scots would get two outs, before Montana Lineberger's two-RBI single would score Herman and Vaughn. Each of the three runs ranked unearned, as Salem led 4-2.
After Rachel Taylor drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fourth, Brewer recorded Maryville's first hit of the day with a standup triple to right-center. Pinch runner Gabrielle Rathmell scored on the play. Murray's sacrifice fly to left would score Brewer to knot the game at 4-all, as the game would go the the fifth.
The Scots would add an additional run in the bottom of the fifth, after Ashton Hayden singled to center. She stole second, before Jenna Roberts' RBI single pulled her around. Hayden avoided the tag at the plate, as Maryville would close out the seventh with a 5-4 win.
Maryville (21-18) was led by Brewer's 1-for-2 day, as she tallied two runs and an RBI. Roberts was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Hayden went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Rathmell scored a run, as Murray had a run and an RBI. White tallied an RBI for Maryville.
For Salem (27-16), it was Lineberger and Dacunto who went 2-for-4. Lineberger had two RBI, while Dacunto added one.
