The Maryville College Harriers had a big Saturday morning, as the women's squad finished fourth and the men's squad sixth in the Piedmont College Invitational.
Daniel Beckett led the men with a fifth-place overall finish on the 8K course, while Taylor Williams finished 21st in the 6K race. Susanna Cook and Lea Mulligan finished right on her heels in 22nd and 23rd respectively.
"Ninety percent of our runners improved from last week, while running a harder course," Head Coach Tyson Murphy said. "On the men's side, Daniel Beckett was just off his personal record by about 20 seconds, and he is way ahead of where he was last season. Ryan Lay had a huge personal best by about 45 seconds, and the rest of our guys fought hard for our finish today. On the girl's side, we saw the same success – almost everyone running faster on a harder course. Senior Chandler Chastain probably had the largest impact stepping into the fifth scoring position today. Our girls team is running three minutes faster than they did on this course last year, and that's a really big deal."
In the women's 6K race, Anderson (S.C.) was the winning team, as Haylee Love took the individual title. Maryville ranked fourth among nine teams on the day with an average time of 26:56.
Williams finished in 21st with a time of 25:54, while Cook ran the course in 26:01 for a 22nd-place run. Mulligan was just 6 second behind Cook with a 26:07 time, while Kaitlyn Carringer was 33rd with a time of 27:10. Chandler Chastain was the final scorer with a 29:28 time that was good enough for 39th place.
Molly Ridgeway (31:20, 47th), Anne Marie McDurmon (37:03, 65th) and Erin Dupes (38:50, 70th) all had strong finishes.
On the men's side of the race, Beckett had a huge day finishing as the fifth overall individual. He ran the 8K course in 27:47, while leading the Scots to a sixth-place finish.
The team averaged 33:39 on the day, as Ryan Lay finished 37th with a time of 32:31. Chase Chastain ran the course in 35:07 for a 45th-place finish, while Sawyer Cradit was 48th with a time of 36:18. Lee Parker rounded out the scoring with a 36:34, 50th-place run.
Andrew Amburn finished 53rd with a time of 37:51.
