Maryville College moved to 12-1 on the 2017 season Friday night, as MC claimed the Battle of the Scots with a 3-1 USA South victory.
Jameson Elmore was a key factor, scoring the first two goals for Maryville, including the game-winner. That goal helps the Orange and Garnet clad Scots bring home the Covenant-Maryville Cup for the fifth-consecutive time dating back to 2012.
MC has defeated the Georgian Scots in each of the last four regular season meetings, as the two teams tied in 2014.
Maryville continues their winning ways this season, as they rank as the only unbeaten squad in USA South play across both divisions.
Maryville would strike first in the 44th minute just before the half. Milan Card would take a pass on the right side, dribbling it just into the box. He would use a low, hard cross to the middle of the box, as a streaking Elmore would deflect it off a Covenant defender and into the lower left corner for a 1-nil MC lead.
Maryville would hold that lead at the half, as they outshot their Georgian counterparts, 6-3. The Orange and Garnet held four corner kicks to zero from Covenant.
The second half would be much different, however, as Maryville upped their offensive attack. The Scots tallied 11 shots on goal to Covenant's five in the stanza, while adding a pair of corner kicks.
Maryville would rally again in the second half, as Elmore would find his second goal of the contest. Card took the ball near the midfield circle, crossing it to the right to Randy Reichenberger. Reichenberger dribbled the right side, dishing a long cross from the right to the far left side of the box. Johnny Rakhmonberdiev would collect it with a diving header back in front of the net, as Elmore sent an easy-touched kick between the legs of a sprawling Jonathan Crossman. MC held a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute.
The scoring would continue from there, as Elmore's second goal broke an almost 30-minute lull.
Covenant Anthony Buzzeo would take a throw in on the right side, finding Josiah McDaniel. McDaniel made three defenders miss, before passing it back to the top-right of the box to Buzzeo. He dribbled through a pair of Scots, shoving a defender before clanking it off the right post and in for Covenant's only goal of the match in the 78th minute.
Maryville would answer in the 83rd minute, as Gavin Dougherty heaved a long throw in from the right side near the top corner of the box. Reichenberger would skip a header into the corner of the net from 13 yards out, earning MC the 3-1 victory.
Maryville (12-1, 7-0 USA South) was led by Elmore's two-shot, two-goal performance. Reichenberger added a goal on a trio of shots, while Rakhmonberdiev had an assist with four shots.
Card and Dougherty each had assists, as Card and Long each added a pair of shots in the winning effort.
MC's Ryan Jorgensen moves to 12-1 on the year, posting a trio of saves in 90 minutes of action.
For Covenant (5-9-1, 2-4-1) it was Buzzeo who scored the goal on a lone shot. Carl Simakoff led the Georgian Scots' eight-shot effort with four shots, two of those on goal.
Maryville will look next to a rescheduled match against USA South rivals N.C. Wesleyan College. The match – which will also be Senior Day – is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3:30 p.m.
