A Johnny Rakhmonberdiev goal and assist propelled the Maryville College men's soccer team to their third consecutive victory with a hard-fought 2-0 decision over Centre College on Sunday afternoon on MC's home pitch.
Both squads battled for possession and attacks in the first half. Each squad took four shots before intermission with defense ruling most possessions.
After halftime, Maryville out-shot the Colonels 10-7. The Scots got on the scoreboard in the 74th minute. MC's Johnny Rakhmonberdiev blasted a free-kick from about 20-yards out. Centre keeper Bailey Spade looked like he completed the save, but the side judge ruled that the ball had trickled over the line for an unassisted goal-his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, Rakhmonberdiev took one of MC's three corner kicks in the second half and hit Bret Thomas. Thomas placed a skilled touch into the upper right of the net for his second goal of the season.
The shutout was the Scots' third of the season. MC's Ryan Jorgensen moved to8-1 in net after recording five saves.
The victory moves Maryville to 9-1 on the season as the Colonels fall to 5-4-1.
Maryville will now prepare for a non-conference mid-week challenge at Brevard College on Tuesday before hosting USA South rivals Methodist University and North Carolina Wesleyan College next weekend.
