The No.1 seeded Maryville College men's soccer program advanced to the USA South semi-finals with an exciting 7-2 victory over No.8 seeded Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon on MC's campus pitch.
USA South Player of the Year Caleb Lucas got the Scots on the scoreboard first in the 5th minute. Freshman Johnny Rakhmonberdiev stole a pass from a defender, attacked the box, and dished to Lucas. The All-American pushed his 20th goal of the season into the lower left to make the score 1-0.
At the 16th minute, Ferrum was called for a hand ball in the box. All-USA South defender Thomas Palmer sent the penalty kick past Panther keeper Derek Thomas for the 2-0 advantage.
The eventual game-winner was netted in the 25th minute by Maryville's Bret Thomas. Another assist from Rakhmonberdiev was sent toward an attacking Thomas. The sophomore from Spring Hill poured in his 6th goal of the season for a 3-0 lead.
Maryville's 4th goal of the half happened just four minute before intermission. A Scot midfielder lofted a pass into the box. It's high projector bounce into the upper crossbar. MC's John Nesbit collected the rebound and tapped in the goal for his first of the season.
Leading 4-0 and the break, Maryville out-shot the Panthers 16-4.
MC would extend their advantage in the 57th minute. Thomas Palmer advanced a pass from the right. Rakhmonberdiev collected the ball from over 20-yards out and blasted a bender into the upper left corner for his third goal of the season.
Ferrum attempted a rally with a goal in the 60th minute by Alex Armstrong assisted by Shamarr Perry.
The visitors tacked on their final goal in the 68th minute with Shamarr posting his 12th goal of the season with an assist by Moore Dolue.
The loss eliminates Ferrum from the tournament with a final record of 5-14. Maryville advances to 16-2. The 16th win ties an MC school record established in 1988 where Coach Fernandez's squad went 16-4.
The No.1 seeded Scots will host the semi-finals on Friday, November 4th followed by the league title match on November 5th. Details will be released on www.usasouth.net
