Maryville College's Caleb Lucas earned USA South Player of the Week honors after his record-breaking performance last week.
Lucas totaled five goals and one assists in Maryville 2-0 week, as the senior forward continues to make his mark on the Maryville College record books.
This Maryville, Tenn. native became only the eighth player in Maryville College history to record four or more goals in a contest with his 'poker' performance over USA South foe Piedmont College.
"Caleb is a natural talent, but there is a lot of natural talent out there," Head Coach Pepe Fernandez said. "What most people donw see is the hours he spends on the field in the summer by himself, working on finishing or running sprints. It seems that every time I drove by the field this summer, either Tim Baker or Caleb was down there working on their game. So, the real secret to their success is diligence and hard work, and the team is reaping the benefits of their dedication."
Lucas' four-goal outing is the first such performance in nearly 10 years, as the last Scot to reach that mark was Evan Giordano, who scored four goals on Nov. 3, 2007 against Huntingdon College.
Tuesday's performance was the senior's third hat trick in two years, and his second in as many weeks. He sits tied for third, trailing only Quint Webster and Todd Tompkins who have four career three-goal games. Lucas accounts for the 47th hat trick in Maryville's soccer history.
"I play this game to score," Lucas said. "It's great to have a team that keeps finding me. It's working for us. Tim [Baker] got two tonight, and I think three assists. He and I are clicking, and the rest of the team is shooting on all cylinders. We're playing well."
In a 4-0 victory over non-conference Roanoke College, Lucas scored the match's first tally and assisted on the second.
The senior tallied the game-winner in both matches.
On the season, Lucas has scored 15 goals in the Scots' 12 matches. He has eight assists and 38 points. Lucas leads Maryville College and the USA South Athletic Conference in goals, points and shots (70). On the year, he has a .586 shots on goal percentage.
Lucas has scored 30 goals in his two-year career at Maryville and ranks 12th in MC history. He has 14 assists, 74 points and five game-winning goals. The senior ranks 11th in career points. He has started every match for the Scots in the two-year time frame.
Maryville currently holds a 10-2 record, as they boast a 5-1 conference mark. The Scots sit atop the USA South rankings with a .833 winning percentage in the USA South.
Maryville will host a pair of USA South foes over the weekend, as they take on Averett University at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. MC will face William Peace University at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16.
