The Maryville College Scots soccer squad opened their tournament at Covenant College with an impressive 5-0 win over Millsaps College.
The Scots' Cody VanKerschaever tallied two goals – one to open the game and one in the second – to secure the victory.
Maryville moves to 2-1 on the young season after finding their first shutout of the 2016 season.
Maryville opened the scoring just 30 second into the match, as VanKerschaever dribbled around defenders in the box and scored. It gave Maryville a 1-0 lead very early, and they wouldn't look back.
Andrew Sullivan deposited the Scots second goal of the game with 33:33 showing in the first half. Caleb Lucas gave him the assist on a short cross just 7 yards out, as Sullivan found the back of the net.
Just 2:55 into the second half, the Scots made it a 3-0 match. Brett Thomas found his second goal of the season with a cross into the box from Hayden Puryear. Puryear's assist was sent to the net by Palmer from just 7 yards out.
With 61:10 showing in the 90-minute match, VanKerschaever found his second goal. Lucas gave up a through ball, as VanKerschaever found the net from 10 yards out. Just a minute later, Michael Quatrano scored an unassisted goal with a 15-yard chip shot over the keeper for the final score of 5-0.
Maryville outshot Millsaps, 12-11, as seven of the Scots' shots were on goal to just three. Ryan Jorgensen (2-1) got his first shutout of his Maryville career after turning away all three shots from Millsaps in 79:40 inside the net.
Millsaps' Jonathan Huebbe (0-3) takes the loss with a complete game in net.
Maryville will continue their tournament with a 5:00 p.m. match against Belhaven University tomorrow afternoon. The match will take place on Covenant's Scotland Yard.
