Coming off a 10-5-2 overall record, and a 6-3 conference record the Scots soccer program finished tied for 2nd in the USA South Athletic Conference Regular Season in just their 2nd year in the conference this past fall. After graduating four seniors Coach Fernandez hit the recruiting trail hard to get ready for the start of his twenty sixth season at the helm of the men's program. Fernandez, who has compiled a 312-136-32 overall record, has announced seven commitments to join the program in the fall.
The new commitments to the Scots include:
Ben Sternberg (Louisville, Tennessee/Heritage HS) Ben was a standout goalkeeper for the Mountaineers under the direction of Head Coach Nick Bradford. Sternberg was a three year varsity letterman, leading the team to their best ever season as a senior.
Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez had this to say: "Ben is coming off his high school's most successful season. Playing in the district of death has prepared him to be ready in every single game. He will join the competition to play with our two returning goalkeepers."
Patrick Green (Cookeville, Tennessee/Cookeville HS) Patrick was a standout midfielder for the Cavaliers under Head Coach Sam Matson. Green was a four year letterman leading his team to two state tournament appearances. Individually Green was a two-time All-District and All-Region selection, and he holds the school record for assists. Green played his club soccer for USUSC Eagles.
Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez had this to say: "Patrick is a proven goal scorer and exciting attacking player from a high school with an excellent soccer program. His team made it to the final 8 this year. After seeing him at our camp we knew he was a player that could come in and compete for playing time."
Seth Douthat (Fall Branch, Tennessee/Dobyns-Bennett HS) Seth was a three year letterman for the Indians under the direction of Head Coach Chris Woods. As a junior Douthat was named to the All-Region 1st team, and he also played club soccer for FC Alliance.
Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez had this to say: "As a Region III ODP player Seth has competed and played at a very high level. He has shown the ability to put the ball in the net at the state, regional and national level. We are excited to see him do the same here."
Andrew Sullivan (Leesburg, Georgia/Deerfield-Windsor School) Andrew was a four year letterman for the Knights under the direction of Head Coach Aly Joslin. Sullivan led his team to two straight elite eight appearances. Individually Sullivan was twice named the region player of the year, and finished his high school career with 28 goals. Sullivan played his club soccer for South Georgia United.
Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez had this to say: "Andrew was one of the top players in South Georgia. Andrew will add a great deal of skill to our team and will fit the Maryville system very well. We are very excited to have him in the program."
Randy Reichenberger (Hendersonville, Tennessee/Hendersonville HS) Randy was standout forward/attacking midfielder for the Commando's and Head Coach Russ Plummer. Reichenburger lead his team to two district titles during his prep career, and individually was named to the all-district, and all-district tournament teams for three consecutive years. Reichenburger played his club soccer for Tennessee United Soccer Club.
Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez had this to say: "Randy is a Russ Plummer Hendersonville High School product and joins a long list of excellent MC players from the Hendersonville Soccer Tradition. We expect him to step in and be a major contributor just like his Hendersonville predecessors."
James Bedwell (Memphis, Tennessee/Memphis University School) James was a standout forward for the Owls under the direction of Head Coach Vincent Beck. Bedwell was a four year varsity letterman in high school and led his team to the state quarter finals his senior season. Bedwell played his club soccer for Lobos Rush Premier.
Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez had this to say: "James also joins a group of Memphis players who have been standouts at MC. His club team will be competing and regional's this summer and the experience of playing at a high level will prepare James for the college game."
Cody VanKerschaever (Apopka, Florida/Wekiva HS) Cody was a standout midfielder for the Mustangs under Head Coach John Cassidy. VanKerschaever was a four year letterman in varsity soccer. VanKerschaever played his club soccer for FC America 95/96 Premier.
Maryville College Head Coach Pepe Fernandez had this to say: "Cody comes to MC from the soccer hotbed of the south. Cody's club team competed at the highest level so he will be prepared to step into the college game right away. We are expecting him to compete for playing time in the midfield."
