Maryville College suffered its fourth loss of the season on a rainy Saturday afternoon, as the Averett University Cougars took the USA South win, 12-7.
The Scots could not find a long-driving score in the game, as MC's only score came after an interception set Maryville up on the Cougar 19-yard line.
After that first-quarter touchdown for the Scots, Maryville went silent. Averett's Cole Westberry would notch four-straight field goals for 12 unanswered points in the win.
Maryville went just 2-of-14 on third downs for a 14-percent conversion rate. They totaled 206 yards in the game, as the Cougars outgained the Scots with 228 yards of offense.
Averett controlled the clock on the ground with 133 yards of rushing, as they held the ball for 34:45 of the 60-minute game. The Cougars were aided by a pair of interceptions and a fumble, as Maryville recorded a pair of picks of their own.
The Scots went 0-for-3 on field goals, as Averett was 4-for-4.
Maryville (4-4, 2-3 USA South) was led by Adam Diggs' 11-for-28 performance, as he had 127 yards passing.
Maryville's defensive effort was led by Blake Henderson's nine tackles, as he had one tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Cedric Brown had eight tackles, as DeAngelo Collington had 1.5 sacks on four tackles.
For Averett (4-4, 4-2), it was Westberry that led the way with four field goals. He notched kicks of 47, 22, 35 and 19 yards for the victory.
Quarterback Christian Miles was 12-of-23 for 95 yards through the air, as the led the rushing attack with 15 carries for 57 yards. Sean Bowman had 55 yards on 20 carries for the Cougars.
Myles Bennett had 81 yards receiving on seven catches.
Maryville would strike first with 8:16 left in the first quarter. Chadwick would pick off Miles, returning it 38 yards. He was pulled down by a horse collar tackle, as MC started on the Averett 19-yard line. Diggs would find Ligon on play action to the right for 14 yards, before Hairston would finish the two-play drive with a 5-yard run off the left side. The Scots led 7-0 early.
Westberry would score his first field goal and longest with 13:39 left in the second quarter. Diggs' was picked off by Kevin Northcutt, as Averett started at the MC 32-yard line. However, the Cougars couldn't convert, as Westberry's 47-yard kick was good for a 7-3 score.
A 10-play, 29-yard drive would stall at the Maryville 6-yard line, as Westberry would complete his second kick of the first half with 5:12 left. The 22-yard attempt made the score 7-6 at the half.
With 11:36 left in the game, Westberry would be called again. A long 13-play, 62-yard drive stalled at the 18, as his kick of 35 would make the score 9-7 in favor of Averett.
He would add his fourth – a 19-yard attempt – with 4:55 left in the fourth quarter, as Averett would take the win, 12-7.
Maryville will look next to face off with LaGrange College at home. The game is slated for Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
