Scots upset No.21 Methodist 3-1

Christian Poulsen tossed a complete game while going 3-for-4 at the plate to help Maryville College defeat No. 21 Methodist University 3-1 in a key USA South Athletic Conference road challenge on Saturday afternoon in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The Scots tallied a solo run in the sixth inning when Gabe Lopez doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third on a Christian Poulsen single. Lopez scored on a Cody Gregory sacrifice bunt giving MC a 1-0 lead.

Methodist answered in the bottom of the sixth when Tucker Criswell singled before dashing home on a Will May RBI double.

Maryville's Drew Johnson doubled with two outs in the top of the ninth with the score tied 1-1. Matthew Petzelt pinch ran for Johnson and scampered home on a Logan Hayes opposite-field game-winning RBI single. Kolton Hicks singled to advance Hayes before Gabe Lopez loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. The Scots plated an insurance run when Christian Poulsen placed an infield single scoring Hayes.

The Scots' offense finished with 12 hits led by Poulsen (3-for-4, 1 RBI), Gabe Lopez (3-for-3, 1 Run), and Drew Johnson (2-for-4).

On the mound, Poulsen scattered seven hits while allowing only one earned run in the complete-game effort.

The victory advances Maryville to 11-7 overall and 4-4 in USA South action. The loss drops the Monarchs to 15-3, 6-1 in league challenges.
