Late rally helps Scots defeat Centre 3-2 on the road

The Maryville College baseball team earned their third consecutive win to begin the season after a late rally lifted the Scots past Centre College 3-2 in Danville, Kentucky on Tuesday evening.


Hayden Hollingsworth led off the game with a single to centerfield and promptly stole second and third. Andrew Henry tallied the game's first RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field plating Hollingsworth.


Mike Homan put the Scots up 2-0 in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle scoring Drew Johnson who reached earlier on an error by the third baseman.


MC's Christian Poulsen got the start on the mound. In his second appearance of the season, the junior right-hander did not disappoint. He held the Colonels scoreless for 5.1 innings scattering three hits. Senior left-hander Zach McGee thwarted a scoring opportunity in the sixth with a key strikeout before inducing an inning ending lineout.


Centre rallied to tie the game late. The Scots' bullpen could not hold the lead after a bases loaded wild pitch and walk tied the game 2-2 in the eighth.


Maryville's Mike Homan walked with one out in the ninth. He advanced to second on a stolen base and then to third on an infield error. With pinch hitter Eric Hart at the plate, Homan trotted home with the eventual game winner after the Centre pitcher was called for a balk.


Samuel Joiner closed the door for the Scots earning the win after forcing a pair of groundouts and a fly ball. He went 1.1 innings of relief for his first victory of the season.


Maryville (3-0) was paced offensively by Hayden Hollingsworth and Patrick Messinger who each posted a pair of hits. Hollingsworth scored a run while also stealing three bases.


Centre falls to 1-3 on the season. Austin Sharkey led the Colonel's five-hit attack with a pair of hits including a double.
