Scots' Rodriguez pitches his way to USA South rookie hurler accolade

The USA South Athletic Conference has announced their performers of the week and Maryville College's Anthony Rodriguez has been named the league's baseball rookie pitcher of the week.

The freshman from Miramar, Florida picked up a win in a 7-3 victory over USA South foe Averett in his only appearance on the mound for the Scots last week. Rodriguez tossed six innings and allowed three runs on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

The Scots are 10-9 on the season and presently in third place in the USA South with a 6-3 league record. Rodriguez is 2-1 on the season holding opponents to a .229 batting average. In 24 innings of work he has recorded 17 K's while sporting a 2.55 ERA.

Coach Cody Church was excited about Anthony's performance this weekend. "Anthony did a great job for us this weekend and has for the first half of his freshman campaign. He stepped up in a big way pitching game one of the series against Averett and keeping them in check the first five innings. He competes well and is able to throw multiple pitches for a strike. He has very bright days ahead here in Maryville."

Maryville will prepare to take on non-conference foe Wilmington College (Ohio) on Tuesday afternoon on MC's Scotland Yard. The double-header will begin at 1:00 p.m.
