Scots take series opener against Averett, 7-3

Maryville College moved to 9-8 on the season, as they defeated Averett University in USA South Action on a blustery Saturday.

With winds topping out at 22 miles per hour, the Scots managed seven hits and seven runs. MC took advantage of Averett miscues for the 7-3 victory.

Anthony Rodriguez pitched a good outing for the Scots, as the freshman hurler gave MC 6.0 innings of work. The lefty allowed just three runs on two hits, as he struck out five batters. He had five walks on the afternoon.

Zach Messinger added 1.2 innings of work, as he gave up just a single hit. He struck out on in seven batters faced, before passing the baton to closer Joe Jones. Jones tossed 1.1 innings to earn the save in the game, as he struck out three of his four batters faced.

Maryville College struck first after loading the bags in the top of the third. Johnny Carpenter was hit by Dallas Smithers' pitch to earn the RBI, as Patrick Messinger scored on the play. Alden Wright grounded out to second for an RBI, as Logan Hayes scored to give the Scots a 2-0 lead early.

MC added another run after Evan Ezell earned a one-out single. Hayes scored the catcher from third with a fielder's choice RBI to second, as Maryville led 3-0 going to the bottom of the fourth.

The Scots would make it three innings straight with a score in the top of the fifth. Carpenter reached with his second hit-by-pitch of the afternoon before stealing second. Wright earned his second RBI of the day with a single down the left-field line to score Carpenter from second. Wright would score four batters later off a Cougar error, as he was plated from second base. After four-and-a-half innings, MC led 5-0.

Ferrum struck back in the bottom of the sixth, as the Cougars would score three runs to cut into the Scots' lead. Bradley Tickle used an RBI single to left to score Chase McKinney, before Matt Tuggle used an RBI single to right to score A.J. Hart. Tickle would score on a wild pitch, as Maryville led 5-3 going to the bottom of the sixth.

The Scots would add some insurance in the bottom of that inning, as Derek Hurt used an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Caleb Adams from third. Going to the seventh inning, MC held a 6-3 lead.

An Averett error with two outs in the top of the ninth allowed the Scots to add another run. Adams used a single through the left side, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. He would score from second after Joey Tomlinson reached on an error by shortstop to give the Scots a 7-3 victory.

Maryville (9-8, 5-2 USA South) was led by Wright who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Patrick Messinger went 2-for-3 with a run plated, while Adams was 1-for-1 with two runs scored. Ezell and Hayes each added a hit and a run, while Hayes added an RBI. Carpenter tallied a run and an RBI without a hit, as Hurt followed suit with an RBI.

For Averett (4-13, 0-4), it was Hart, Tickle and Tuggle combined for the only hits of the day for the Cougars. Maryville's pitching staff held them at bay in the game.

The Scots will take on Averett University to complete the three-game series with a double-header tomorrow, March 11, in Danville, Va. First pitch is slated for noon.
