Maryville takes second game of Covenant series 5-4

The Maryville College baseball team took the second game of a key USA South Athletic Conference series at Covenant College on Saturday afternoon by the score of 5-4.

 

Covenant took an early 2-0 lead of MC starter Anthony Rodriguez in the bottom of the third inning. The freshman lefty surrendered a double to Devin Cerrato scoring Lewis Saunders before Cerrato would cross home plate on a fielder's choice by Alex Kerr.

 

Maryville lit up the scoreboard in the fourth inning when freshman centerfielder Derek Hurt blasted a three-run homerun over the left field fence giving the visiting Scots a 3-2 advantage.

 

MC extended their lead to 4-2 in the sixth when leadoff hitter Andrew Henry drew a bases loaded walk to plate Drew Johnson.

 

Covenant tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when centerfielder lifted a two-run homerun off MC reliever Sean Holton to tie the game.

 

Maryville took the late lead in the ninth when a Covenant miscue on a Johnny Carpenter bunt sent Andrew Henry home.

 

MC's Joe Jones closed out the final 2.2 innings on the mound to earn his first victory of his senior campaign.

 

Maryville (6-7, 3-2 USA South) tallied only five hits during the challenge. First baseman Drew Johnson finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Starter Anthony Rodriguez gave MC another quality start with 5.2 innings scattering five hits and allowing only a pair of earned runs.

 

The third and deciding game of the series will take place on Saturday evening in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
